Solar street lights could make streets both safe and energy saving

The solar powered lights will be more and more useful in the following days. The street lamps is a frequent pedestrian walk area with a blind spot at the end. Recently with several solar powered street lights and solar blinking stop signs been installed on the Street, The street is much safer now. People in the area that work at night feel safer now .And the installation is executed by the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southeast, Public Works Department (PWD).

According to Roy Dolley, Resource Efficiency Manager for PWD Mayport, the base will save not only energy, but money as well.

"The lights and stop signs are just a small part to what the base has planned but a project of this type typically saves about 30 percent in energy consumption," said Dolley. "It will take a year of it running before we will know for sure how much we will have lowered our energy bills."

Ensign Daniel Brown, Operations Officer and Energy Installation Manager for PWD said Lamps Street was not the only place to get signs and most likely will not be the only place to get lights.

"We have installed the solar stop signs in various locations on the base," said Brown. "We also are installing pedestrian blinking yield signs at cross walk areas and solar powered speed radar systems as well."

The solar street lights and signs project is just one of many that Mayport has in the works to save energy and money. The base is pushing to drop energy consumption by 50 percent by the year 2020.

Now solar powered lights are very widely used these days in the country, and we should all to put even more solar powered lights into use to save energy and keep our environment clean.
